We had a very fun day on Saturday at the Fairfield Bike Shorts workshops. The theme of this second workshop was story-telling, script-writing and camera angles. We also quickly looked into lighting and sound for film.

The day began with some ice-breaker exercises. On the theme of story-telling and to get creative juices flowing, we had a quick improvised story-telling exercise known as “Tall Stories”. To play Tall Stories, participants are asked to gather into a circle. A person begins the story by describing a short scenario and ending it with the word “suddenly…” and the next person in the circle continues the story ending again with the word “suddenly…”. This goes around the circle until everyone has contributed building the story.

It was a fun and silly exercise and below is audio recording of the Tall Story our workshop participants came up with:

After looking at more filmmaking theory, workshop participants went on a short guided tour by bicycle around the local area, lead by Doug, Glenys and Mark of the Western Sydney Cycling Network. This ride was of particular importance as some hadn’t ridden a bicycle for over ten years! After the workshop participants came back from their bike ride, we had a practical camera exercises for participants to consider how they might begin to film various scenarios.

And finally, the day concluded with a short presentation of ideas to the class and to the Western Sydney Cycling Network for feedback and comments.
