Fairfield Bike Shorts (FBS) is a series of workshops and events with culturally diverse local residents exploring cycling cultures and heritage through art, storytelling and film. This project will culminate in the production of short digital works to be screened at an inaugural film launch in Fairfield which will coincide with the annual Sydney Bicycle Festival in 2013.

THE TEAM

Phuong Le is the Project Producer. She grew up in Cabramatta is a member of the Western Sydney Cycling Network (WSCN) and the Powerhouse Youth Theatre. She has extensive experience facilitating workshops and organising cycling events. She is a architecture graduate, and has a background in the arts and working with culturally-diverse communities. Some of her experience includes: Producer of the Sydney Bicycle Film Festival (2006); assisting the artist collective ‘Squatspace’ in the “If you see something, say something” art exhibition on a community mapping project (2005) and curating ‘Tassie Forest’ art exhibition (2006); organising ‘By Bike’, an architectural bicycle tour, as part of the Melbourne Architecture Annual (2012); being involved in many local groups including the Centre for Education and Research into Environmental Strategies (2010) and at the Australian Institute of Architects’ Sustainable Architects Forum in Melbourne (2011), the AIA’s Sydney Environment Forum (2013) and Marrickville Council’s Environment Committee (2013).

Vinh Nguyen is a 24 year old freelance videographer with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications. He specialises in short film and animated works, creating pieces for clients like Sydney Theatre Company, Cancer Council, Sydney Festival, PYT and Fairfield City Council. Vinh is an award winning artist, including Best Film at 48 Green Hours 2011 and Shortcuts 2012. His films have been screened at Cannes and nationally around Australia. Previously he has facilitated film workshops for Fairfield, Bonnyrigg and Prairiewood High School. A Hepatitis B Campaign by Cancer Council involved Vinh guiding Cabramatta High students in film workshops to create a Hep B commercial. He continues to create visually challenging films and improving his editing skills. Currently he is working on an experimental film about the radio.

Rudge Hollis is a local film-maker based in Smithfield. He currently works on contracted projects at the University of Sydney while also juggling other film-making projects. Rudge has extensive knowledge in technical details of camera operation and lighting and has extensive experience film-making.

Roxie Vuong is a local film-maker based in Fairfield. She has a keen interest in documentary film-making, which has won her numerous awards including the UTS Golden Eye Award.

Douglas Draper is a Canley Heights resident of over 30 years and is the President of the WSCN. Douglas has been with WSCN since its inception and is highly involved in the group’s various projects which include monthly community rides, Thursday rides, Active After School Communities (teaching school kids to cycle) and the Healthy Living programs with the Fairfield City Council and Liverpool City Council.

Glenys Draper is a Canley Heights resident and long-term member of the Western Sydney Cycling Network. She plays an active role in the organisation particpating and assisting in its many projects and participating in its regular rides and events.

Mark Rutledge grew up in the Fairfield area, going to Smithfield Public School and Prairiewood High School. With family still living in the area, employment in Wetherill Park and involvement with Western Sydney Cycling Network, Mark frequents the local area. Mark’s film-making experience comes from involvement in the community television station CTV-1 volunteering on “Around the world with Joy” which was a live to air program for the local community, then later aired on Channel 31 back in the days before digital TV. Mark believes Fairfield Bike Shorts is a great project that will showcase the beauty and diversity of the Fairfield municipality and its bicycle friendly environment to a wider audience through upcoming film festivals. Mark has come on board to share his local knowledge, bicycle and TV crew experience to help make this project a success.
