Workshops aim to help bike-riding filmmakers

Most people think of bike shorts as an unflattering item of sportswear, but for a group of Fairfield cyclists, they represent a combination of passions – cycling and film.

Fairfield Bike Shorts is a series of workshops, starting on Saturday, August 10, aimed at making short films capturing the city’s cycle-friendly culture and culminating with screenings in Fairfield for Sydney Bicycle Festival.

Producer Phuong Le said that the resulting films would be submitted to the 2014 International Bicycle Film Festival.

“We’re aiming to get four different types of short film out of these workshops – animated, music video, documentary and fictional narrative,” she said.

“We’re looking to document the progress and show it to other councils who might be interested in doing something like this.”

The workshops are supported by the Western Sydney Cycling Network and Fairfield City Council and are also aimed at promoting cycling to the greater community.

“I just find it so liberating,” Ms Le said.

“It’s such an easy way of exercising and an environmentally friendly way of getting around.”

Participants will be taken through the whole process of making the films in these workshops, starting with an introduction to storytelling and script writing and continuing through the production cycle.
